Many of us have a tale of the one that got away, but in the new romantic comedy, Baggage Claim, Paula Patton plays Montana Moore, a newly single flight attendant intent on rekindling several romances from years ago….
With just one month until the wedding of her younger sister, Sheree, played by Lauren London of BET’s The Game, Montana feels the pressure to get her love life back on track – and fast. With the help of her co-workers, Sam and Gail Best, played by Adam Brody and Jill Scott, she comes up with a seemingly foolproof plan: Align her flight schedule with those of her former flames in hopes of scoring a second chance at love. What results is a series of outrageous hijinks proving once and for all that, when it comes to love, the journey can be as unpredictable as the destination.
Hip Hop Weekly caught up with the film’s cast, which includes Taye Diggs, Boris Kodjoe, Derek Luke, Lala Anthony, Tia Mowry-Hardict and actor Trey Songz for an inside look on the making of Baggage Claim.
According to David E. Talbert, the film’s director, creating scenarios that were both funny and real was a team effort from the start.
“We literally spent hours and days making sure that [Montana] had humanity and that the character wasn’t just desperate or trashy. I think that, for me, it was a collaboration with Paula and us shaping this thing.” Talbert said.
Paula Patton, the film’s star, agrees. According to Patton, her character’s transition will speak to any woman that has gone through an unexpected breakup at a time when everyone else seems to be in love.
“When you first meet her, she’s so hopeful.” She said. “She thinks she’s met the man of her dreams, and she’s gonna get married. As she’s dealing with her sadness her sister says ‘I’m getting married in a month!’”
During the course of the film, her character learns there are limits when it comes to love.
“She’s dressing for each man and trying to be the right person. But the thing is, she has something in her constitution that just won’t let her compromise that much,” Paula said.
